Resident Research and Elective Opportunities

The following is a partial listing of research opportunities by site. For specific information regarding research opportunities, please contact Drs. Deb Cowley (543-6577) or John Neumaier (731-2896).

In addition, in 2001-2002 we are offering a 0.2 FTE NIMH-funded training program in clinical research for two R4s who are interested in clinical research and who have research experience. Please contact Dr. Cowley for details.

CHRMC: Research areas include basic neuroscience (Alan Unis, M.D.); attachment and conduct disorder (Matt Speltz, Ph.D.); attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (Chris Varley, M.D.); adolescent depression (Elizabeth McCauley, Ph.D.), childhood psychotic disorders (Dr. McClellan).

HMC: projects include basic neuroscience (Drs. Neumaier, Pham); health services research (Drs. Roy-Byrne, Snowden, Comtois, Ries); seasonal affective disorder (Dr. Avery); repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (Dr. Avery); dual diagnosis (Dr. Ries, Barrett); geriatrics (Dr. Snowden); borderline personality disorder (Dr. Comtois); HIV / AIDS (Drs. Uldall, Elliot); adult attention deficit disorder phenomenology and treatment (Drs. McCann and Roy-Byrne).

UWMC: projects include health services research / psychiatry in primary care (Drs. Katon, Walker, Sullivan, Ciechanowski, Fann, Chwastiak); geriatrics (Dr. Borson); neuroimaging (Dr. Dager); phenomenology and psychopharmacology of affective disorders (Dr. Dunner); basic neuroscience (Drs. Dorsa, Stella), chronic fatigue syndrome (Dr. Schmaling), sleep (Drs. Vitiello, Moe), sexual dysfunction (Dr. Heiman).

VA: projects include geriatrics (Drs. Raskind, Peskind, Barnes, Pascualy, Shores); women's health (Dr. Dobie); PTSD (Drs. McFall, Jensen, Kanter, Petrie); addictions (Drs. Saxon, Calsyn, Kivlahan, Donovan); neuroendocrinology and neuropsychopharmacology (Drs. Raskind, Peskind); basic neuroscience (Drs. Hamblin, Kohen); schizophrenia (Drs. Ashleigh, Radant); neuropsychiatric genetics (Drs. Bird, Tsuang, Raskind, Peskind, Schellenberg).

For those residents committed to pursuing a research oriented career path post-residency, VA faculty can assist in the development of a fundable career development fellowship or junior faculty level grant to provide salary support post residency.
